It’s great to know your son/daughter is interested in joining Explorers. To give you a bit of background on Rammy Explorer Unit, we meet on a Friday night usually for 1h30, between 7 and 9:30pm, as a unit we are of no fixed abode as we try and make the most of activities in the local area although do run a number of our sessions from Margaret Haes Riding School in Holcombe Village. As with the other scout sections our aim is to be youth led but with our young people having a say in the activities we do and skills they learn during their time in Explorers, with much of this being a step on from those already learned in Scouts. As a unit a lot of our focus is on preparing our Explorers for adult life developing skills such as leadership, cooking and problem solving, as well as having the opportunity to undertake the Explorer Belt, one of the top awards in Scouting.
The current subs for Explorers is £90 per year which covers the majority of our activities although some, where external providers are required, such as Horse Riding, Rock Climbing and Skiing to name a few so require some payment although we try to distribute these across the term to ensure every young person has the opportunity to participate in them. We also run a number of events through the year as fundraisers to allow us to keep costs down, these include District events for the younger sections such as Escape Rammy and supporting Greenmount Scout Bonfire. Being Youth Led we also favour Hoodies over the more formal Explorer Shirt which we will send an order form out for early in the term, as these prove more practical for the activities we undertake.
The unit also offers nights away opportunities every term, ranging from indoor Winter Camps to week long greenfield summer camps and entering national competitions such as Dragnet in Cumbria we aim to offer a range that appeals to every young in the district which we hope prepares them for the most demanding challenge completing their Explorer Belt. This is a 18 to 24 month process of training and fundraising, culminating in a 10 day self-sufficient expedition as a team of 4+ in a foreign country, learning about the local culture and geography while also developing team and personal skills that will last a lifetime. Last year our expedition through the Black Forest, Germany, saw 13 of our Explorers successfully complete the award, which only 400 others across the UK had the opportunity to do.
If your scout group used OSM we will ask them to just transfer the details over to us, if not we will get a form over to you to complete.
If you have any further questions, please do feel free to reach out.
